Now the airline has more than 150 airplanes, making 2,300 flights a week to 103 destinations in 65 Countries on 6 Continents. Emirates Airline is owned by the Government of Dubai, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum is the Chairman and Chief Executive. 2.0 Mission Their mission is to be able to carry a passenger from anywhere on this planet, via Dubai, to any other place on the world. Their procurements division mission is to provide an innovative and responsive service that positively supports the group in a commercially astute manner. Analysts have accused the company for focusing too much on their high end acquisitions and diversification inspite of the risky effect of such decisions -Another potential weakness is that the operating profit is based on low wages paid to the general workforce for duties such as baggage handlers, cleaners, and caterers. They are generally recruited from India and are non unionised. These migrant workers face instant deportation if they show resentment to the wage structure. 5.3 Opportunity -A huge opportunity for growth is the physical location of the Emirates. As they see their diminishing passenger numbers on their traditional routes, they see the traveller numbers to the U.A.E. increasing and will try to prise the Emirates Airline passengers away by undercutting the ticket price. -The airline industry is notoriously volatile and subject to cyclical variations of trade. Emirates Airlines seems to weathered the storm in the current global recession, not cutting back on its ambitious expansion plans. Electronic Medical Records and Charting Today’s healthcare is changing, and more hospitals are commencing to go paperless using computers for both medical records and charting. Computers are widely accepted, in personal and professional settings. It is an essential requirement for computer literacy. Numerous advances in technology during the past decade require that nurses not only be knowledgeable in nursing skills but also to become educated in computer technology. While electronic medical records (EMR’s) and charting can be an effective time management tool, some questions have been asked on how exactly this will impact the role and process of nursing, and the ultimate effects on patient safety and confidentiality. In order to investigate these topics, I will be addressing the individual aspects of EMR’s that nurse’s use every day, how they affect collaborative care, and the impact they have on the nursing role. In the Emergency Department at General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (GLWACH) manual paper charting is still used for charting most of the patient care that is per-formed; the exception would be any laboratory studies needed and any kind of radiology proce-dures that must be done. These orders are then put into the computer system, most often by the nurses. I had an opportunity to observe both positive and negative indications during my 72 hour preceptorship at the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital. One Friday Morning Essay

The short story â€Å"One Friday Morning† by Langston Hughes is about a young black girl, Nancy Lee, who recently moved out of the South with her parents so they may provide her with a better life and schooling. Very talented in watercolor painting, she wanted to make that her major in college. Regrettably, there are some people in the world that are just blinded by race and forget how America was supposed to be a place for equal rights without tyranny. Nancy Lee may be a colored girl, but at times in her new school she forgets that she has different skin color than the rest of the students. Her peers would overlook her race as well, and they saw her as a young and talented individual. This represents foreshadowing that she was not seen as colored although she was. Nancy Lee had painted an award winning piece worthy of a scholarship to an art institute. The painting was of her grandmother sitting on a park bench looking at the American flag on a bright sunny day. Unfortunately, the art institute didn’t realize that Nancy Lee was a colored girl at the time they chose her painting. When it was made known, they decided to give the scholarship to a white student as they felt if Nancy Lee were to attend the Institute it would cause controversy amongst others. The day Nancy was to receive the award, she was told by her principal, Miss O’Shay, that she would not acquire this magnificent prize because of the color of her skin. Miss O’Shay regrettably informed the talented girl that â€Å"When the committee learned that you were colored, they changed their plans. † Nancy Lee looked up at her principal and noticed the bright spring day it was outside just like in her painting. At the weekly assembly, Nancy Lee took her seat along with 3000 other students, turned her head, and said the pledge to the flag that is supposed to symbolize freedom and equal rights with â€Å"Liberty and justice for all†. She then decided that even though she was not accepting the award, which was rightfully hers, she would fight to make a difference in the future so no other young girls would go through what she was currently enduring. One gloomy day the principal, Miss O’Shay called Nancy Lee into her office after school. Miss O’Shay made Nancy Lee aware that her painting had won the contest; but also asked her to keep it a secret until the assembly on Friday when she was to accept the award. She was not supposed to tell Nancy Lee, however, Miss O’Shay felt it would be in Nancy Lee’s best interest to know ahead of time so she wouldn’t be taken off guard and could remain composure at the time of the acceptance. The irony in this is that if Miss O’Shay did not tell Nancy Lee of her winning then, on the day of the assembly, Nancy Lee would not have to be called into the office to receive the disturbing news that she would not be called on stage to accept the award because of the color of her skin. Even though Nancy Lee, as well as her peers, would sometimes forget that she was a brown girl, the committee couldn’t see past her skin color. Nancy Lee went from being a bright eyed, brown colored girl to a dark girl that day. Within the context of the story Langston Hughes portrays the stars on the American Flag as a symbol of hope to all. Not only in the 1950’s but also in today’s society the stars on our flag of freedom represent what all Americans are about, liberation and equal rights for all. Our ancestors came to this country to make a better life for themselves as well as their children. Even during our national anthem â€Å"The Star Spangled Banner† the last verse says â€Å"Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave† The stars on the flag will always mean the same regardless the year whether its 1814 when the national anthem was written, the 1950’s when this story took place, or in the year 2012. Bigotry is something that we all have to deal with. Some people are so scared of change and anything different. Even though we all have the same rights as humans, some people just can’t see past the color of a person’s skin; not just the outer difference, but also religious beliefs as well. We live in a society that no matter how much a person can persevere through discrimination there is always going to be someone to try and hold them back. In my point of view, intolerance of someone that is different is a disgrace to all mankind. This is something that Langston Hughes illustrates very well in the story. Nancy Lee, a very talented young girl, deserved to win the scholarship; but because of the color of her skin she was denied what was rightfully hers.

One mark of how developed a culture is its art forms. The arts are a large aspect or subdivision of a culture. So much of a culture’s beliefs and traditions are reflected of expressed in various art forms. Art is made by an artist, an artist’s way of seeing and interpreting things are dictated by the culture of the society of which he is a part of; this is the relationship of the arts and culture. They have a link that cannot be severed. Ancient art forms that are reflective of a societal culture can include architecture, calligraphy, culinary arts, dance, drawing/ painting, fashion, music, language, literature, sculpture, crafts, and theatre; all these are represent the rich culture of a society. Some new and modern art forms that have been brought upon by technology include film and photography. As for East Asia, in geographical context, it is the region of Asia covering 12, 000, 000 square kilometers, which is 28% of the whole Asian continent. Countries in the East Asian territory currently include Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan. East Asia being the home of some of the first great and influential cultures and civilizations, their ancient works of art would be a good area of study to understand how their culture developed. During the ancient times, the major societies that served as the cultural roots of the region are China, Japan and Korea. Understanding how their culture began through the events that transpired in the first 500 years of the Common Era that contributed to the development of their art can give us an insight on what their culture was and how the present culture of the region came to be.

Nappy Roots essays On October 31, I attended the Nappy Roots concert at Millet Hall. The whole gymnasium was packed with people who came with the intention of having a great time listening to quality Rap music. From the Halloween costumes to the power of the crowd, the whole event was unforgettable. Who is Nappy Roots? Six students from Western Kentucky University decided to follow their dreams and form a rap group in 1996. Skinny DeVille, R Prophet, Big V, Scales, Ron Clutch, and B Stille are the stage names of Nappy Roots. Their real names are William Hughes, Ryan Anthony, Vito Tisdale, Melvin Adams, Ronald Wilson, and Brian Scott. Their southern-based roots, from Georgia and Kentucky, give them their unique style. The diversity of the people in the concert was of a wide variety. The young crowd dressed informally or even dressed up for Halloween, making it a very interesting site. I was surprised to find many people dancing to the music. This was a big difference from the conservative formal concerts I have attended for this class. The opening act was disappointing. First, they were thirty minutes late. Second, I couldnt even hear what their name was due to the horrible accent the lead singer had. Third, they lacked up-beat songs that people could relate too. Two of the songs werent even songs people could dance to. The other song was too fast to hear what the words were, and people were in a state of confusion. Overall the group didnt seem prepared for such an unforgiving crowd. The long twenty-minute intermission came to an end. Nappy Roots ran to the stage, and the place explodes. We all listened to music off of their third album Watermelon Chicken & Gritz. The first song goes through and I noticed that one device they used was a sort of a pre-lude. It did not link pay to performance. Workers were paid a fixed salary based on the number of hours worked. This system does not take productivity into account as workers are paid the same amount per day regardless of the quantity produced. There is no incentive to reward workers for higher productivity and quality under this payment system. Another reason why the fixed salary system did not work was that it did not take cultural differences into account. Andrew imported an American business model that suited American employees who tend to have a highly individualistic culture. This is where workers perform their job based on what is required of them and do not care so much about other worker salaries but place more precedence over their own. The Chinese tend to have a culture of collectivism where each worker looks out for the best interests of their co-workers. Employees tend to place their collective goals ahead of those of the company and if both do not agree, a situation of lack of goal congruence results. QUESTION 2: Andrew adopted the same salary system as he seen used by his former employer and paid his workers a fixed salary based on the number of hours worked. The results of his actions were low productivity rates, and the workers demonstrated very little commitment to meeting the companys goals. The success of a fixed salary system requires stable, mature, responsible employees, a cooperative union, willing supervisors, and a workload that allows continuous employment. Based on the case it is evident that the fixed salary system adopted by Andrew was not successful hence we think that scrapping the fixed salary system and replacing it with the piece-rate system was a good idea but it  must be implemented with strict quality control programs. Piece-rate system usually works like this: An employee is guaranteed an hourly rate (probably the minimum wage) for performing an expected minimum output (the standard). For production over the standard, the employer pays so much per piece produced. Some of the strengths and weaknesses of the piece-rate system are as follows. Compared with a fixed salary system, the introduction of a piece-rate system usually leads to substantial increase in productivity. This system is a form of extrinsic motivation to employees. This means that the piece-rate pay, which stems from the work environment external to the task, motivates employees. According to the case, if workers produced at or below the minimum production standard for the day, they received additional money for each extra piece produced; hence they are motivated to produce above the rate in other to receive additional money. The piece-rate system may be designed to affect output other than performance. For example, employers may use the system to lower absenteeism and turnover. The system also allows employees to monitor the performance of individual employees, compare them and take the necessary actions based on the results and reduces non-value added activities which in turn lower cost. Along with the many strengths of the piece-rate system there are also some weaknesses. The use of the piece-rate system does increase output. Although production increases, other performance criteria may suffer for example quality. As mentioned in the case, after a short period of introducing the piece-rate system customer complained about low quality of the goods they were receiving from the company. Some employees are more inclined to perform better than other, since people have varying motivation to work. Employees may be dissatisfied if they have to work harder or if they feel manipulated by the system. And finally a piece-rate system that rewards individual productivity might decrease cooperation among workers. QUESTION 3: Andrews efforts were unsuccessful mainly because of the culture of the workers. The Chinese culture is one of collectivism which explains why the quality control inspectors chose to ignore products of poor quality. An implementation of a demerit system and wage deductions of quality workers may have worked but may have also had an adverse effect on the workforces motivation and their morale. The employment of additional supervisors and the shipping of final products may have also eased the situation but the question of whether the benefits outweigh the costs should be of major importance to Andrew as the chance of the company facing losses increases. Again, considering the culture of the workforce, there is a great possibility the most of the new supervisors can adopt the same attitude as the current ones. Presently, the method used by Andrew is a reactive one; an effective way to improve quality may be to have a more proactive system. Along with training the quality staff, Andrew should also train the production workers. The use of this preventative method will save a lot of resources that would otherwise go to waste. Andrew should also explain to all workers the true and long term cost of allowing product of poor quality to reach the market, which would be the loss of customers, the closing of the plant and their dismissal. The North American culture is more individualistic whereas the culture in Asian countries such as China and Singapore is more collectivist. As a result, salary systems that emphasize individual initiative may not be successfully implemented in China as it would be in America. The collectivist culture in China emphasizes interdependence and loyalty to ones work group. If the plant was located in North America, the fixed salary system may not have been successful in increasing productivity because there in no incentive for employees to exert extra effort. In other words, the fixed salary system can be seen as unsuitable to the manufacturing industry, where improved productivity is important to the success of the firm. On the other hand, the piece-rate system can be effective if the plant was located in North America because given the countrys individualistic culture, employees would be more willing to exert individual effort to earn extra money. The company would benefit from increased productivity and highly motivated employees. In addition, the problem experienced with the quality control workers may not have been present if the company was located in North America. Given their individualistic nature, quality control employees in North America would not have accepted poor quality output from the production employees because it would not matter to them whether or not the production workers received a reduction in compensation. QUESTION 5: Management by Objectives (MBO) is a systematic, continuous management program designed to facilitate the establishment and accomplishment of goals as well as promote employee development. With an MBO program, objectives and goals for the organization are developed by top management and filtered down to the lower hierarchal levels. Chang Koh Metal Ptd Ltd is located in China, a country that values a high power distance between top management and other organizational members. As a result of this culture, employees value the goals of top management as it diffuses down the hierarchy. This would empower and motivate employees as they would feel as though they are part of the organization and therefore be more committed to serving it. When the goals are passed down to employees, they feel that they are pursuing a common objective, one that is shared by their coworkers. As a society that values collectivism among employees, the workers would feel that, by working towards common objectives, they are working towards the betterment of the  company. MBO programs aim to develop employees skills through training and employee interaction. At present, Jian Weis hiring practices allow people who do not have the skills necessary to perform a job to be hired for the job. By training the workers, Chang Koh Metal will benefit from increased productivity as skilled workers can be more efficient and effective in the workplace. Training will also solve the problem of poor quality as, through an MBO program, quality goals for both production and quality control employees can be set and adhered to. Employees can be trained to reduce internal and external failure of products while increasing prevention and appraisal procedures. This will result in financial savings to the organization. The culture of the organization and employees would also be important. Analyzing the culture of the employees would help in establishing an effective and efficient workforce within the organization. Implementing this strategy would aid the other managers in preparing and analyzing strategies that will best suit the culture of the workforce. Furthermore, understanding the culture and attitudes of the employees would also help the human resource managers of the organization design specific motivational strategies to increase the morale of the employees. They would be able to distinguish whether the workers are intrinsically or extrinsically motivated within the plant. Another strategy that I would consider is to encourage cohesive teamwork amongst the workers throughout the plant. This action would increase the benefits of the piece-rate salary system. Also, since the employees would be working in groups, more collaboration will be taking place, as well as the workers will feel more committed within the organization. One of the main reasons why Chang Koh Metal Ptd. Ltd. is experiencing a number of quality problems is because of the recruitment of unqualified workers. As a manager I would recommend, that despite the lower operating costs of employing cheap labour qualified and skilled workers should be selected. One has to remember that in order for an organization to be successful it relies on the output from the employees. These are some of the things that I would implement as a manager in Chang Koh Limited.

Application of Quality and Systems Management Strategic Quality and Systems Management (SQSM) Understanding and application of quality and systems management in an organization Preface Company profile Grundfos Pumps Ltd (GPL) is wholly owned subsidiary company of Grundfos Holding A/S Denmark. GPL is a sales and marketing company covering the UK, founded in 1964 as the 2nd sales company to be setup outside Denmark. GPL today is a leader company of supply pumps and pumps systems for domestic, commercial building services and industrial applications. In 2012 the turnover was  £142m which achieved by 140 staff who are all engaged in supporting sales covering all UK by the main office which located at Leighton Buzzard and another five regional sales offices. Grundfos purpose statement: â€Å"Grundfos is a global leader in advanced pump solutions and a trendsetter in water technology. We contribute to global sustainability by pioneering technologies that improve quality of life for people and care for the plant† Market share research, showing that GPL are very strong in the domestic applications sales as they have 72% of the whole market in addition to commercial application. In 2009 GPL addresses the question â€Å"how can we become a  £200m business by 2020?† this question was setup as a long term strategic target. 1.1 Explain the importance of effective operations management in achieving organizational objectives (A.C 1-1) Market opportunities, economy and efficiency of conversion operations are the main goals of each organization. Operations management as a part of the organization system has own objectives which should align with the organization strategic plan and objectives. Operations Management objectives can be categorized into (1) customer service and (2) resource utilization which are fully integrated. Generally customer satisfaction is the most important and key objective of the operation management, this leads the organization to utilize their resources for the satisfaction of customers. So operating system shall provide either product or services to a specification which can satisfy the customers in terms of timing and cost to achieve the primary satisfaction. GPL employ a team of fully dedicated staff who interface with customer, either face to face or telephone basis, taking in the consideration sales and marketing is the core of the operating system. 1.2 Evaluate the success of existing operations management processes in meeting an organisation’s overall strategic management objectives. (A.C 1-2) The fully dedicated staff are consider the heart of success and their feedback feed information to the company via the line / regional managers to address any issue in the quarterly meeting. Grundfos production and supply chain companies such as ; GBW,GDS,PGF and Hillage are primary supplier to GPL , in other term , GPL maintain an approved supplier list and agreements are held for these supplier to assure the continuity and avoiding risks in term of time and cost. GPL has regular meeting with GBW and the other supplier to review the products and to develop them against the market requirements and competitor offerings. GPL is being able to provide solutions for large commercial applications on a project basis , that was complying with the unsettled condition during economic crises in 2007/2008 in addition to the ability of supplying energy efficient options which align with GPL sustainably strategy . 2.1 Explain the importance of effective quality management in achieving organisational objectives. (A.C 2-1) Business success extent how the organization can produce a higher quality product and service than the other compotators with a competitive price .Quality is the key to GPL success as it shall increase and continue with the higher percentage of the sales in the commercial and domestic application, and they are focusing to increase their share in the industrial waste water market as they currently have 7% of the market share. GPL is a new comer to the industrial waste water market which considers a potential significant growth in this market. To exploit that, they need to develop their consulting capabilities to be reflected on their delivery and projects. 2.2 Evaluate the success of existing quality management processes in meeting an organisation’s overall strategic management objectives. (A.C 2-2) GPL has used UK award entry to benchmark their selves in the local and broader business communities, by technological developments and promote environmental issues. They have some significant success such as BPMA PIA (Pump Industry Award), BSS (Customer- Most improved supplier) and Green Apple (environmental) award in addition to ISO9001 ISO 14001 to comply successfully with the standards. Chart 2-2-1 showing that the main strategic target to achieve  £200m sales by 2020 might be setup according to the slightly linear curve for the planned sales growth in all market sectors. This required all sectors to remain focussed and monitoring their gaols against a set of KPIs. To be in line the plan to achieve the required results, continuous monitoring and taking the required actions as a corrective or preventive action needs to be taken if there is any deviation on the plan. 3.1 Plan a strategic quality change to improve organisational performance. (A.C 3-1) Quality is a major part of GPL operating system and considers one of the main needs to achieve the strategic goal which become a  £200m business by 2020; GPL’s quality system showing continues improvement among the last 10 years which align with their business growth. Some of the EFQM Excellence Model’s criteria planned to be implemented as a short term plan for one year, and to evaluate the required resources tools and systems to implement all the model’s criteria within the next upcoming two years. EFQM Excellence Model is a practical framework that enables the organization to: Asses where they are on the path to excellence, and helping them to understand their key strength and potential caps. Provide a common vocabulary (Excellence language) and way of thinking about the organization that facilitate the effective communication of ideas. Integrate existing and planned initiatives, removing duplication and identifying gaps. Provide a basic structure for the organization’s management system. The main target of implementing the EFQM Excellence Model is to achieve and sustain outstanding levels of performance that meet or exceed the expectation of all GPL’s stockholder. Two of nine of the EFQM Model’s criteria were chosen and adjusted at the first stage of implementing the EFQM model in GPL: Strategy criterion: GPL to implement its mission and vision by developing a stockholder focused strategy, policies, objectives and plans by the following: Understanding the needs of stakeholder; by gathering stakeholder’s needs and expectations of stakeholder as an input to the strategy development process. Identify and analyse the external indicators such as economic and market trends. Analyse the operational performance trends to understand the current and potential capabilities and identify where development is needed. Compare and benchmark their performance to evaluate their strengths and areas of improvement. Select clear goals and objectives which align with the market opportunities. People criterion: GPL to value its people and create a culture that allows the mutuality beneficial achievements, developing the capability of people and promote fairness and equality by the following: Define clearly the people level of performance which required achieving the strategic goals. Align people plans with the strategic goals. Develop people’s skills and competencies to ensure their future mobility and employability. Understand the communication needs of their people and use a proper tools and strategies to maintain that. 3.2 Define resources, tools and systems to support business processes in a strategic quality change. (A.C 3-2) Resources, tools and systems required to implement the setup plan by applying some of the EFQM Excellence Model’s criteria are very limited as GPL has own quality system and resources. Additional resources, tools and systems listed below: Well known EFQM quality specialist (from the existing team, to get EFQM training). Market economic researcher (from the existing team or can be newly hired). HR specialist (from the existing team). Scoring sheet. Analysis and trend program (Microsoft Excel can be used). Training Calendar for all employees. Site visit Calendar for top management and EFQM specialist. Audit program. Training program which align with the strategic targets 3.3 Evaluate the wider implications of planned strategic quality change in an organization. (A.C3-3) Two criteria were selected to be implemented as a short term plan, to be the start of implementing the EFQM Excellence Model. To support GPL achieve their strategic goal, to become a  £200M business by 2020. Strategy and people criteria selected to be implemented to help GPL to be on the track of achieving the target and to find out any gaps or potential threat. People as explained before are the core and the engine of GPL business; the plan was setup to assure that they are aligned with GPL strategy goals and to achieve their satisfaction. 3.4 Design systems to monitor the implementation of a strategic quality change in an organisation. (A.C 3-4) Scoring sheet for each criterion designed to evaluate the success of implementation, to follow up and take the required correction preventive action as the following: Zero to 11: require an immediate corrective action and recovery plan. 12 to 23: require a motivation and preventive action in addition to recovery plan. 24 to 28: result to be populated and participants to be honoured. 4.1 Implement a strategic quality change in an organisation. (A.C 4 -1) Strategy criterion: The management team determine the market and product sales strategies, targets and goals. Each director summaries this in a â€Å"Market Signals† report for their business area, incorporating feedback from the UK market. Bi-annually, input is gathered from group management in form of a target letter. This letter includes broad sales and cost targets that drive GPL’s overall business objectives. The board of directors meets quarterly with GPL to review the direction and plan the strategy going forward. Company goals are communicated at the company conference and published via their internal communication system. Each division develops their own strategy map to translate these objectives into specific actions. Based on the strategy map, annual plans and budget, GPL develop a set of KPIs as a tool to be used to review their progress against their goals. People criterion: Bi-annual survey, managed globally by Grundfos Group, which is completed by individuals anonymously. Themes include: employees satisfaction, motivation, loyalty, personal development and pay terms. It also asks for opinions on management, daily work and colleague relationship. According to the defined strategic, GPL determine the skills competencies required to achieve these goals. The assessment from the Employee Development Dialogue (EDD) enables them to identify the gaps between the current and required skills and ensure appropriate training is available, either from the Grundfos Academy or another parties. EDD completed annually in the form of 1:1 meeting with the line manager, with a mid-year review to check the progress, topics discussed are performance evaluation, target development, skills gap analysis and training needs. GPL use different channels to communicate with their employees, including direct discussion, INSITE, the annual conference, the work council, meetings and notice boards. All employees are eligible for either individual bonuses or team reward. The bonuses are based on their performance against objectives. 4.2 Embed a quality culture in an organisation to ensure continuous monitoring and development. (A.C 4-2) The board directors consider the plan of the quality change as a part of the strategic plan, and the result of implementation and monitoring were included in their quarterly meeting agenda to endorse all employees to achieve the target of the plan. 4.3 Monitor the implementation of a strategic quality change in an organization. (A.C 4-3) Site visits and assessment of the planned criteria show that GPL hasn’t benchmarked and compared their performance with the compotators, while they covered all the planed objectives under the people criterion. 5.1 Evaluate the outcomes of a strategic quality change in an organization. (A.C 5 – 1) As a final evaluation, results of the assessment considered as a tracker to the strategic goal and guarantee that the operation management system align with the planned objectives. That helps the top management to evaluate the business trend to keep GPL on the track to become a â€Å" £200M business†. 5.2 Recommend areas for improvement to a strategic quality change that align with organisational objectives. Responding to Future Challenges    As the world grows so do our challenges. Not only are our problems growing in number but they are also growing in complexity. There is scarcely a day that goes by when I don't hear about some new problem that will soon threaten us all. While some of these problems such as El Nino, earthquakes, and other natural disasters cannot be stopped -- there are other challenges such as the spread of racial hatred, rising risk of disease spread, and the growing levels of civil unrest throughout much of the world which threaten many lives everyday. Most of the future's challenges will only be made possible if all people, regardless of race, color, or nationality, attempt to work together for a stronger world. There are many ways in which I believe that I can help society meet this future challenge of coming together as a united world.    While I was an exchange student, I saw the world from a different point of view. For the first time, I realized that the people of the world have so many similarities in comparison to the few and insignificant differences. To make the people of the world unite would merely take time in convincing people of the world that we are all in pursuit of the same basic goals. All that it would take to show that this could be done is two different cultures to unite and then the rest of the world what can come by the strength all gain by coming together.    I believe that I can help in solving some of the barriers that hold us back from completing the task that we all desire which is unity. I served as a miniature version of a diplomat when I was an exchange student. I helped people in another country see that we all have common goals and I also helped sever the bonds to racial hatred by providing them insight into the American way of thinking and they did likewise for me. I have done everything to help sever these ancient bonds and will continue to do so in the future as I feel I am called to do.    Many suffer problems on a much less grandiose scale. Although these problems may not seem to be as big as world peace or global warming, they are however present.

Commentary on ‘Testing the Reality’ Essay

This short but powerfully descriptive poem tells the story of a young man who comes to discover just how fragile the boundary between life and death really is. Written in the form of a dramatic lyric, the poem highlights the moment of revelation and reflection as the man realizes his mother hadn’t died; instead she had moved on to another place. The themes of death and abandonment are clearly depicted by the poet through the use of tone, setting, rhythm, symbolism, hyperbole, alliteration and time. Through all these methods, the poet builds a sense of sorrow and feeling of utter reliance the narrator has upon his mother. It emphasizes the man’s lifelong journey, from a young child learning to count to a fully grown man mourning the death of his 70-year-old mother. As he grows in body and matures in mind, he fills his head with knowledge and pushes at the boundaries of his world, â€Å"testing† it. The name ‘Testing the Reality’ arises because the son has to face the reality of life, and the deaths that occur in life. The poem takes place in a church, in a funeral set-up, with flocking birds in the sky. We understand this because of the phrase â€Å"so crammed church roof and belfry.† I can comprehend that it is a funeral because the poet relates the hibernation of the birds to a 70 year old woman. The writer also illustrates a picture of a myriad of birds as he writes â€Å"There must have been 10,000 there or more.† Even though he feels immense loneliness and sadness after the passing on of his mother, he is not yet ready to follow her, and must remain in â€Å"reality,† hence he is â€Å"the last soul still unhatched†. The poem begins in the first person as the poet describes his experiences as a boy. We learn that his mother taught him to â€Å"count to a ragged 20 but no higher†. When he was still a boy, the sheer number of birds perching on the belfry exceeded his counting abilities, â€Å"cramming church roof and belfry, cross and spire†. At this later stage in his life, however, it is not due to his counting skills that he cannot count but due to the sheer immeasurable quantity and their uncontrollable, free nature, unable to be caged or catalogued. Their numbers were so great that â€Å"their final taking off blacked Beeston’s sky†. These birds feature throughout the poem, creating a sense of activity and movement and dramatic symbolism. Here, the black sky symbolises the unfortunate and sad mood. While the â€Å"flocking birds† represent what the man is looking at and his memories of them as a boy, they also have a metaphorical meaning, symbolizing the life and death of his mother. The crossroad of reality and imagery appears in line six with the following alliteration: â€Å"picketed piercingly the passing of each day†. The power of the repeated ‘P’ sound reflects the sound of the birds’ cries. In the poet’s mind, each bird also represents a single day in the life of his mother. In fact, as the second stanza progresses, the birds only exist to measure the accumulated days in the life of the man’s mother. Her attraction towards the birds is completed when they suddenly depart, taking her life with them. The shock of the mother’s death is so deep that the first person used throughout the first two stanzas is obliterated and transformed into the third person in the last stanza, the man suddenly being referred to as â€Å"her son†. The third stanza also dramatizes the metaphorical blend of his mother and the birds. Death becomes the â€Å"wings of night†, her life becomes â€Å"the flocking days†. Her departure from the earth is an effusion, a release, of all her physical experiences which are â€Å"soaring† away. So significant was she to her son that her departing life â€Å"blocked the light†. In the final line the son becomes an unhatched egg/soul left behind â€Å"in the clutch† or the nest. Having come to associate the birds with his mother, his memories of her are immediately summoned whenever he sees them. She may be dead but she lives on in his memories of the birds. At first they â€Å"shrilly hailed the first new light they saw,† greeting the new day in what initially seems to be an irritating way because they are portrayed as having loud, high-pitched cries that are not particularly pleasant to the ears. However, after his mother dies, and they leave too, he comes to see them in a different light, after they â€Å"soared away.† His opinion of them has now changed and he sees them as graceful and elegant creatures. This imagery also successfully implies life after death, and the setting of the poem becomes important when looked at in this light. A church is a place of peaceful meditation, praying and holiness, a place where the boundaries between the physical and the spiritual, the barriers between life and death, merge. For these reasons it becomes the nest that hatches souls into the heavens. Even though the birds, and the man’s mother with them, fly â€Å"beyond all sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch† they do not fly beyond love or memories, instead leaving a path for the man to follow when it is his turn to be â€Å"hatched†. The lesson the mother taught her son began with counting, but ended with a realization of life after death and the possibility of living, in spirit, for infinity.

Food Recipes

bread Ingredients 1 packet (2 1/4 tsps) active dry yeast 1 cup warm water (110 – 120 degrees) 2 Tbsp. milk, room temperature 1 Tbsp. dark brown sugar 3 Tbsps. melted butter, room temperature 1 tsp. coarse salt 3 cups bread flour (spooned and leveled) 4 quarts of water 1/2 cup baking soda Coarse salt to taste 2 Tbsps. melted butter Directions †¢In the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large bowl, combine the yeast, water, milk, brown sugar, and butter. Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes so the yeast come alive. †¢Mix in the coarse salt, then the flour, one cup at a time. The dough will be tacky. Spray a large bowl with cooking spray or coat with oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl, flip to coat on both sides, and cover with plastic wrap for 30 minutes. †¢After 30 minutes, knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Return the dough to the bowl, flip to cover both sides, and re-cover for an hour, or until roughly doubled in size. †¢Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and bring 4 quarts (16 cups) of water to a boil. Gently deflate the dough and cut in half using a sharp knife or bench scraper. Shape each half into a round loaf. †¢Slowly add the 1/2 cup of baking soda to the boiling water (it will bubble).Place one piece of dough onto a large slotted spoon and gently lower into the boiling water. Use the spoon to flip the dough in the boiling water for around 20 seconds, then lift the dough out of the water with the slotted spoon – allow the excess water to drip back into the pot. †¢Set the dough onto a greased baking sheet. Repeat the water bath with the remaining dough. Sprinkle both rounds with coarse salt, then slash an X on the top of each with a sharp knife so the bread can expand while it bakes. †¢Bake for 20-25 minutes, rotating the sheet halfway through. †¢Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter.

Traditionally adult learners are students who are pursuing education in either, college (undergraduate or graduate degrees), vocational or occupational programs, continuing education or noncredit courses, correspondence courses and tutoring, as well as courses and other educational activities provided by employers, community groups, and other providers (â€Å"Adult Learner,† 2012). The average age of an adult learner is 25 years or older, it usually is a diverse group of people (â€Å"Adult Learner,† 2012). These adult learners can be an independent student, employed full time, a person with dependents, a person who as a result of a death or divorce, is now single and wishes to complete a degree program and a veteran of the United States military (â€Å"Adult Learner,† 2012). There also the lifelong learners who generally have additional responsibilities such as family, career, military, or community, and are seeking a degree or other educational offering to enha nce their professional and or personal lives (â€Å"Adult Learner,† 2012). Education is any formally structured learning activity in which there are an instructor and curriculum. According to Bringhamton University (2012), the largest and fastest expanding market segment for higher education is the adult learner. Universities and colleges need to adjust their infrastructure to attract better and serve adult learners. There is less high school graduates entering colleges versus the adult learner (â€Å"Demographics,† 2012). With less traditional aged students and more non-traditional or adult learners there will be less public support, political leverage, and legislative support to finance an educational system that is designed primarily to serve the needs of traditional aged students without considering the special needs of a more age diverse student body (â€Å"Demographics,† 2012). There is a push in Washington for more federal dollars in adult training. They believe the  return on investment (ROI) from adult education and training is posi tive as billions of dollars could be earned, saved, and pumped back into the struggling economy (Gonzalez, 2011). The argument at capital is that adult education actually saves governments money by reducing societal healthcare, public assistance, and incarceration costs. It also improves and expands the nation’s available pool of workers by helping motivated, but undereducated people get jobs (Gonzalez, 2011). The theory of adult learning is the assumptions about how adults learn. Emphasizes the value of the process of learning in adults (â€Å"Adult Learning Theory,† 2007). Malcom Knowles and American practitioner and theorist of adult education defined is as an art and science of helping adults learn (â€Å"Adult Learning Theory,† 2007). Knowles also defined six adult learning principles as adults are internally motivated and self-directed, adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiences and are goal orientated. They also relevancy oriented and are practical learners who like to be respected when in the classroom (â€Å"Adult Learning Theory,† 20 07). As educators, we need to foster the adult learner’s internal motivation to learn. Develop a rapport with the adult learner, encourage them to ask questions and explore concepts. Some adult learners come with years of experience and knowledge, with this as an instructor or teacher we need to harvest this information and have them apply it to their new learning experiences. The need to for effective adult education over the past few years have increased. It is important we support adult learners. As with the increasing adult learning population, we are also increasing our nation’s available pool of workers. It is important that we invest in adult education as it nurture’s creativity, imagination and fulfilling lives. Investing in adult education is also important for families, communities and our country as a whole. Education is an important first step for some adult learners as it is a second chance in learning. Adult education is a great way for students that didn’t finish high school to get their high school diploma and continue on with their lives. Adult education is usually at night, so that the adults who attend it may still continue to go to work. This allows theses adults to continue to progress in their lives while adding more education to their resume and mind.
